What this page helps you practise
- word analogies and relationships
- synonyms, antonyms, and vocabulary in context
- classification and odd-one-out questions
- logic statements and verbal deductions
Year 9 Edutest verbal reasoning challenges students to recognise word relationships, classify language patterns, and apply logical deduction. Focused practice builds both speed and accuracy.
Try each question first, then open the worked solution to check your answer and see how to reach it.
1.INEVITABLE is to UNAVOIDABLE as OPTIONAL is to...
Answer: B (VOLUNTARY)
INEVITABLE and UNAVOIDABLE are synonyms, both meaning certain to happen. So find a synonym for OPTIONAL, meaning something you can choose to do or not. VOLUNTARY means done by choice, so it matches. REQUIRED, NECESSARY and MANDATORY are all antonyms of optional, so they break the synonym relationship.
2.Which word is an antonym for 'obscure'?
Answer: B (Clear)
'Obscure' means unclear, hidden or hard to understand, as in 'an obscure explanation'. The antonym is 'clear'. 'Hidden', 'dark' and 'vague' are all close in meaning to obscure, so they are synonyms. 'Obscure' can also mean not well known, but in this set of options, the opposite is clearly 'clear'.
3.If some A are B, and all B are C, then...
Answer: B (Some A are C)
Some A are inside B, and all of B is inside C. So the A's that are in B must also be in C, which means some A are C. We cannot say all A are C, because the A's outside B might not be in C. Drawing circles shows that only part of A is certain to be in C.
4.Microscope is to Small as Telescope is to...
Answer: B (Distant)
The relationship is 'an instrument and the kind of thing it helps you see': a microscope helps you see things that are very small. A telescope helps you see things that are very distant. Stars and space are what a telescope often looks at, but the first pair describes a quality (small), so the matching answer is a quality: distant.
5.Fire is to Ash as Explosion is to...
Answer: B (Debris)
The relationship is 'an event and what remains afterwards': after a fire, ash is left behind. After an explosion, debris (scattered broken pieces) is left. A bomb causes an explosion rather than being left by it, and noise and smoke happen during the event, not as the remains.
6.If A is older than B, and B is younger than C, and C is older than A, who is the youngest?
Answer: B (B)
Turn each statement into an order. A is older than B, so B is younger than A. B is younger than C. C is older than A. Putting it together from oldest: C, then A, then B. So B is the youngest. Drawing an arrow line from oldest to youngest keeps these clues straight.
7.Which word is an antonym for 'loquacious'?
Answer: C (Taciturn)
'Loquacious' means very talkative. The antonym is 'taciturn', which describes someone who says very little. 'Talkative', 'chatty' and 'verbose' all mean the same as loquacious, so they are synonyms. Knowing that 'loqu' relates to speaking, as in 'eloquent', helps you work out the meaning.
8.Which word is an antonym for 'apathy'?
Answer: B (Passion)
'Apathy' means a lack of interest, enthusiasm or concern. Its antonym is 'passion', meaning strong feeling and enthusiasm. 'Indifference' is a synonym of apathy, and 'boredom' and 'laziness' are related to it. The prefix 'a-' means without and 'path' relates to feeling, so apathy is literally 'without feeling'.
9.Bird is to Aviary as Bee is to...
Answer: B (Apiary)
The relationship is 'an animal and the place where people keep it': an aviary is an enclosure where birds are kept. An apiary is a place where bees are kept in hives. A hive is the bees' home, which is a tempting choice, but the more precise match for 'aviary' is 'apiary', the managed collection.
10.Syllogism: All birds lay eggs. A platypus lays eggs. Is a platypus a bird?
Answer: C (Cannot be determined)
The premise says all birds lay eggs, but it does not say only birds lay eggs. So knowing a platypus lays eggs is not enough to prove it is a bird. Logically, the conclusion cannot be determined from the statements given. In real life a platypus is a mammal, which shows why this kind of reasoning is unsafe.
Practise under time limits once students know the main question types.
Build vocabulary through word families and context clues.
Review why each wrong option fails the relationship being tested.
It covers word analogies, synonyms and antonyms, odd-one-out classification, and logic-based verbal deductions.
Regular practice with timed question sets, vocabulary building, and careful analysis of incorrect answers is most effective.
